This study is looking at how well Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) works after total knee replacement surgery. NMES uses electrical pulses to help strengthen muscles. After knee replacement, many people experience weakness in their thigh muscles (quadriceps), which can make recovery harder. This study aims to see if using NMES more often in physical therapy can help improve your strength and ability to move. You might be able to join if you are 18 or older, recently had a single knee replacement, and are attending physical therapy at a UCHealth or Intermountain Health clinic. The main way success will be measured is by how quickly you can complete a "Timed Up and Go" test, which measures how fast you can stand up, walk a short distance, and sit back down. The current status of this study is unclear.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Underwent primary unilateral TKA
Attended outpatient rehabilitation at a participating clinic within 5 days after TKA
Attended at least 3 total outpatient physical therapy visits in total

Exclusion

NMES Contraindications \[Patients with implanted cardiovascular cardiovertedefibrillator (ICD), active cancer, post-operative diagnosed deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in involved lower extremity\]
Previous lower extremity arthroplasty less than 12 weeks prior to scheduled TKA surgical date
  • Timed Up and Go (TUG)Pre-operative visit; Post-operative PT baseline, 2 weeks, 4 weeks (primary endpoint), 6 weeks, up to 24 weeks
