Web-based Program for Pain and Risky Substance Use
This study is testing two web-based programs for adults who have ongoing upper arm or hand pain that wasn't caused by an injury, and who also use substances in a risky way. The programs are called Web-TIRELESS and Web-MEUC. Web-TIRELESS teaches mind-body skills, coping strategies for pain and substance urges, and acceptance skills. Web-MEUC is an educational pamphlet about pain and relaxation. The study wants to see if these programs are easy to use, acceptable to patients, and believable. To join, you need to be an adult outpatient with non-traumatic upper extremity pain (pain score above 4) and risky substance use (specific scores for alcohol, cannabis, and other substances). This study is currently unclear on its recruitment status and plans to enroll 50 participants.
- Study design
- This is a feasibility randomized controlled trial, meaning participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two web-based programs. The study aims to enroll 50 participants.
- What's involved
- You would access your assigned web-based program for about 5 weeks. There will be three assessment points with self-report surveys: at the beginning, after the program, and 6 months later.
- Compensation
- Not stated in the trial record.
- Follow-up
- Participants will be followed for 6 months after completing the program.

What this trial measures
- Credibility and Expectancy Questionnaire (CEQ)Baseline (0 Weeks)
Assesses the degree to which one believes the intervention will effectively manage their condition, substance use, and related worry. Possible scores range from 3 to 27 for both the credibility and the expectancy subscales. Higher scores represent higher credibility and expectancy.
- Client Satisfaction Questionnaire to assess satisfaction with/acceptability of treatmentPost-Test (5 Weeks)
Participants' satisfaction with treatment received after completion. The score range is 0-12. Higher scores indicate greater satisfaction.
- The User Experience Scale to assess participants' satisfaction with (acceptability of) web-based deliveryPost-Test (5 Weeks)
This measure will assess how well patients like the Wed-based program content and delivery. Total raw scores range from 22 to 110 with higher scores indicating greater satisfaction with the platform.
- The percent of patients that agree to participate to assess feasibility of recruitmentBaseline (0 Weeks)
The percent of eligible patients approached that agree to participate.
- Rate at which program was accepted, measured by attendance to assess acceptability of treatmentPost-Test (5 Weeks)
The proportion of Web-TIRELESS participants who complete \> or = 3 of 4 sessions.
- Adherence to homeworkThroughout intervention completion, an average of 1 month
Rate of Web-TIRELESS participant's completion of homework assigned throughout the study.
- Rate of participant's completion of self-report measures to assess feasibility of assessmentsBaseline (0 Weeks), Post-Test (5 Weeks)
Investigators will report number of patients who complete assessments at each time-point.
- Adverse EventsThroughout intervention completion, an average of 1 month
Any self-reported or observed negative events related to participation.
