Comparing Strategies to Improve Depression Treatment for People with HIV

This study is looking at different ways to help more people with HIV who also have depression get the treatment they need. Researchers are comparing two sets of strategies, called "Core Implementation Strategies" and "Enhanced Implementation Strategies," to see which one is better at getting people to start depression treatment. The Core strategies include things like sharing tasks among staff, providing educational materials, and having team meetings. The Enhanced strategies add "train the trainer" programs and ongoing support. The study will also look at how these strategies affect patients' depression symptoms and their HIV viral load (how much virus is in their blood) over one year. This study involves clinics in Cape Town, South Africa, and aims to enroll 10 clinics.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Clinics are eligible if they provide HIV primary care via the City of Cape Town (CoCT) Department of Health
Clinics will be assigned to the study upon notice of funding and before start up.
Are 18 years of age or older and
Have a detectable HIV viral load (operationalized as the lower limit of detection on the standard test is used at the local clinic), or presumed detectable viral load per clinic standards
Screen in for depression via the PHQ (following detection standards set in clinics)

Exclusion

Children below the age of 18 will not be included in the proposed study for adults.
